Westbrook Bay, set along the north Kent coastline, is a short sand, all tides accessible kitesurfing spot right next to Margate Main Sands. Westbrook bay boasts fantastic kickers, big shore dump and plenty of fun with easy mini safari trips to Margate Main Sands for those who want to kite Margate but don’t want to navigate parking on the main sands. This beach is great for those who suffer “tide-anxiety” and don’t want to have to time their session with tides locking out, just watch out for the rock beds.

Local Knowledge:
“This bay is great if you want to kite on Margate but don’t want to park over there. You can easily kite over and back for fun. There’s a big reef between the two bays so watch out when going between.

Westbrook has some great swell, likely generated from the reef so you can get some great kickers.”

How To Use The Bay

There’s a road at the top of the beach that has free parking along the top of the bay. You need to walk down the stairs or slope onto the bay.

There’s plenty of space to launch and land during high tide. Watch out during neap tides because there may be a bit less sand than usual.

FAQ

Is Westbrook Bay suitable for beginner kitesurfers?

No, Westbrook Bay is not recommended for beginners. The rough shore break, larger swell and short bay with rocks and groynes make it quite perilous for those who cannot quickly ride off. Depending on how rough it is, you can get battered by the waves a few times before getting set up making it hard to control your kite and hold onto your board.

What wind directions work best at Westbrook Bay?

Westbrook works best on anything with northerly in it; NW, N, NE all work.  Anything southerly results in offshore conditions and should be avoided.

What’s the best tide state for kiting here?

On Westbrook Bay you can kite any tide condition, neap tides should be fine.

Is there parking nearby?

Yes. Free public parking is available along the seafront.

Are there toilets or showers on site?

No, there are no facilities on the beach. Margate is next and walking distance, but in the winter the public facilities tend to be closed.

Can I take lessons at Westbrook Bay?

No, Westbrook is not a good place for lessons. Please check Minnis Bay for this.
