Ramsgate Main Sands is one of the more difficult spots to kite at, it’s known as “Fin City” to locals. The World Kitesurfing Championships were hosted there in 2021, it’s also where taster sessions and jump courses sometimes take place. Lewis Crathern has done a couple of jump courses on this bay. The bay is the other side of the harbour from Pegwell and the Western Undercliffe. It has a wide sand bay and wide expansive area to kite. Due to the short bay, huge nearby habour, massive cliff face and the fact that it is on the end of the finger of Thanet, the margin for error is tight. Conditions must be exactly right and kiters must understand the tides well. It is recommended that first timers at this spot go with a local or someone who has kited at Ramsgate Main Sands before.

Local Knowledge:
“This is a very tricky place to setup and launch from. You need to planning to avoid 2 hours either side of high tide. Given the position of this bay and all of the obstacles, it is advised that anyone who tries this for the first time, go with a local kiter or someone who has kited here before.”

How To Use The Bay

The car parks are right next to the beach, so you can easily arrive and setup from your car. The beach has the largest Wetherspoons in the country. The swell will run up against the harbour arm so you will find surfers hanging out close to the harbour.
