Minnis Bay, located on the north Kent coast, it’s a large safe spot ideal for beginners and freestyle riders. With wide sandy beaches at low tide and relatively few beach users it’s a good option at all but high tides. As an added advantage, it’s generally much less busy than Whitstable can get at weekends.

Local Knowledge:
“Watch out for the Groynes and water depth across the bay. There are shell beds that can mislead you in to thinking it’s deeper than it is. Be careful getting blown down wind to Reculver, it’s a long reef covered walk back. Tide cuts the bay off 2 hours either side of high tide. Also watch out for the sea wall. This is a great beginner spot. Lots of lessons happen on this beach”
How To Use The Bay
The beach can be accessed from the car parks on the beach front. There is a runway onto the sea wall and then steps onto the beach from the promenade car parking spaces or steps onto the sea wall and then steps onto the beach from the pub car park. Use the section of the bay without the runway on the beach.
There are no rules against using the bay or to follow when using the bay. This space is shared with windsurfers, wing foilers and sailing.
The Tide cuts the bay off 2 hours either side of high tide. Please ensure you give yourself time/space to land, pack down and leave the beach safely.

FAQ
Is Minnis Bay suitable for beginner kitesurfers?
Yes. Minnis Bay is often recommended for beginners due to its flat water at low tide and long sandy beach. However, all new riders should have proper lessons and safety gear before entering the water.
What wind directions work best at Minnis Bay?
Minnis Bay works best on anything with northerly in it; NW, N, NE all work. Anything southerly results in offshore conditions and should be avoided.
What’s the best tide state for kiting here?
The bay is best 2 hours either side of low tide, when the sand flats are exposed. At high tide, the sea comes right up to the wall with limited launch space
Is there parking nearby?
Yes. Free public parking is available along the seafront near the sailing club and by the green. It fills quickly on hot days, so arrive early.
Are there toilets or showers on site?
Yes. Public toilets are located near the sailing club and are usually open year-round. No showers, but there are water taps.
Can I take lessons at Minnis Bay?
Not directly. While there’s no permanent kite school on site, many instructors from nearby clubs (like Kite Pirates) offer sessions here. Contact us to arrange lessons or Kite Pirates directly.
