Joss Bay is East Kent’s main surf spot. Whenever there is a North East wind, you will find swell and surfers on Joss Bay. It isn’t so common to find kitesurfers there. If you go out on Joss Bay, you will need to be careful not to get in the surfers way. This is really their only spot so if you do kite there, we need to respect that and keep further out. The bay itself has cliff faces and reefs which if the tide gets low and you drop your kite onto, will eat your kite. The beach is beautiful and remote but can get crowded in the hotter months.

Local Knowledge:
“Be respectful of the surfers. Keep well clear of them and do not ride through the line up. There’s enough room for kiters to kite further out to sea. The last thing we want to have happen is for kiters to crash into surfers. The swell can get quite big at Joss Bay and the set come very close to each other so be prepared to move quickly. Avoid dropping your kite in the water especially when the tide is dropping because it could get caught in the reefs. The waves can shore dump closer to the beach so don’t ride too far in.”

How To Use The Bay

You can drive straight to the car park at the top of this beach. When conditions are good, you will often see lots of surfers in wetsuits or campervans waiting for the right conditions. The beach is easy to access down a steepish slope.

During the summer, this beach is too busy to kite on and typically the wind is not suitable for this bay during the summer.
